There are various theories around whether employees need to be motivated and how, and there is the theory that everyone is motivated but can (easily?) be de-motivated.

Here’s a list of things/behaviours/situations that can stifle motivation:

  • monotonous work
  • mental overload, but also the opposite
  • inappropriate leadership style
  • lack of communication
  • missing feedback
  • pressure (performance, time…)
  • empty promises
  • unequal treatment
  • discrimination
  • unclear goals
  • ignorance
  • verbal or other attacks, shaming
  • intransparency

Sounds familiar? Hope not… but if it does, start changing whatever you can change. Today.
