There are various theories around whether employees need to be motivated and how, and there is the theory that everyone is motivated but can (easily?) be de-motivated.
Here’s a list of things/behaviours/situations that can stifle motivation:
- monotonous work
- mental overload, but also the opposite
- inappropriate leadership style
- lack of communication
- missing feedback
- pressure (performance, time…)
- empty promises
- unequal treatment
- discrimination
- unclear goals
- ignorance
- verbal or other attacks, shaming
- intransparency
